Private swimming lessons tailored to you

The lesson is planned around what you want to learn. We can focus on exactly what you need help with – whether that means getting comfortable in the water, learning your first swimming strokes, improving your breathing or freestyle technique, or making an already good swimming technique more efficient.

You can come to a private lesson on your own or with people you know. For example, you can bring your partner or a friend, or book a lesson for your children together. I don’t organise groups made up of participants who don’t know each other.

I do not combine individual customers into groups of people who do not know each other.

Who are private swimming lessons for?

You don’t need to have a certain skill level before booking a private lesson. The lesson is based on what you can already do and what you want to learn next.

You want to learn to swim

If you can’t swim yet or don’t feel confident in the water, we start with the basics. We practise getting comfortable in the water, putting your face under the surface, breathing, floating, gliding and the basic swimming movements at a pace that suits you.

You can already swim but want to improve your technique

If swimming feels hard, you struggle with breathing or something in your technique just doesn’t work, a private lesson allows us to focus directly on the problem. You get feedback on your swimming and exercises based on what you need to improve.

You want to take your swimming to the next level

Experienced swimmers can also benefit from individual coaching. We can focus on freestyle technique, swimming more efficiently, swimming longer distances, or training that supports open-water swimming or triathlon.

You are looking for individual swimming lessons for your child

Private lessons are also suitable for children who are learning to swim or want to improve their existing swimming skills. The lesson can be adapted to the child’s skill level without having to follow the pace of a group.

Have you taken swimming lessons before but still haven’t learned to swim?

This is not unusual.

Many people who come for private lessons have attended group swimming lessons before but still don’t feel confident in the water or have struggled with an important part of learning to swim.

Group lessons work well when the pace of the group matches your learning. But if you need more time to practise breathing, floating or a particular movement, the group cannot always wait for one swimmer.

With private swimming lessons, this isn’t a problem. If something doesn’t work, we keep practising it or find another way to learn it. There is no need to move on just because the lesson plan says it’s time for something else.

The goal is not to complete a swimming course. The goal is to learn to swim.

What can you practise during a private swimming lesson?

The content of the lesson depends on your current skills and goals. We can practise, for example:

  • breathing in the water
  • floating and gliding
  • getting comfortable under the water
  • basic swimming movements
  • freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke technique
  • breathing technique
  • body position and balance in the water
  • swimming more efficiently and economically

We don’t have to practise everything. We focus on the skills that are most useful to you.

Over 10 years of experience in personal swimming instruction

I’m Markku Illi, a qualified SUH swimming instructor and FAF Personal Trainer. I have been teaching swimming for more than 10 years, and my own swimming background goes back to coached swimming groups in primary school.

My particular area of expertise is swimming technique and helping swimmers move through the water more efficiently and with less wasted effort. I teach complete beginners as well as experienced swimmers, open-water swimmers and triathletes.

I am in the pool throughout the lesson. I demonstrate the exercises, watch you swim and can correct your technique while you practise.
