What is practiced in the swimming technique course?

Freestyle

In freestyle, we focus on head position, breathing rhythm, and body streamlining. A common challenge is holding the head too upright, which increases water resistance and impairs swimming posture. Instruction emphasizes directing the gaze toward the bottom, body rotation, and bilateral breathing to create a balanced and efficient technique.

Breaststroke

In breaststroke, attention is given to the kick and glide. Common errors include mule kicks or scissor kicks, which reduce effectiveness. We practice keeping the ankles flexed and bringing the legs together in a controlled manner. Proper breaststroke technique follows a clear cycle: arm pull – breath – kick – glide.

Backstroke

In backstroke, we focus on relaxed head positioning and body alignment. Many children fear water entering their nose, causing them to hold their head too high and their legs to sink. We practice relaxed back floating, pelvic control, and arm stroke rhythm. The goal is continuous movement where breathing is easy, and swimming progresses smoothly.

Butterfly

Butterfly stroke is taught if the child desires. It is a challenging but rewarding technique that interests many enthusiastic swimmers. Instruction covers combining the dolphin kick and arm pull, timing of breathing, and body control in the water. We practice the technique step by step to ensure the movement feels achievable and enjoyable.

What is swimming proficiency according to the Scandinavian definition?

According to the Scandinavian definition, a person is considered proficient in swimming if they can, after falling into deep water where their feet don’t touch the bottom, resurface and swim continuously for 200 meters – at least 50 of which must be on their back. This level of skill ensures basic swimming safety and the ability to move independently and with control in the water.

Our 9-year-old daughter has been active in the water since she was little, but when she started school, her swimming skills still weren’t sufficient. As parents, we didn’t know how to teach her, and she refused to join public swimming classes because she didn’t want to learn in a group of strangers. During second grade, she became frustrated that she couldn’t swim long distances and couldn’t join her classmates in the deep pool – she simply lacked the technique.

Fortunately, we found Markku Illi online, and he turned out to be a calm and encouraging swimming instructor for our daughter. Markku’s teaching was steady and confident. With his help, she learned the correct technique for dog paddle and freestyle, gained confidence and courage, and eventually became able to swim long distances. Later, she even felt confident enough to sign up for a diving course.

A swimsuit, towel, and optionally swim goggles are all that’s needed.

No, it isn’t. Butterfly is practiced only with children who are interested and ready for it. It’s not a core part of the course but rather an optional addition that can motivate more advanced swimmers.

Parents are welcome to watch from the poolside, but we aim to help the child get used to working independently with the instructor.
